Patna: In a major political setback for the Janata Dal (United) ahead of the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025, Bhagalpur MP Ajay Kumar Mandal has resigned from his parliamentary post, accusing the party leadership of neglect and favoritism.
Mandal, a senior JDU leader and long-time loyalist, submitted his resignation letter to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the party’s central leadership on October 14, expressing deep dissatisfaction with the internal functioning of the party. In his letter, he claimed that despite decades of service, his opinions were ignored during the crucial seat allocation discussions for the upcoming elections.
“My Opinion Was Ignored,” Says Ajay Mandal
Ajay Mandal stated that during his tenure as an MP, he had never spoken against the party line, yet the organization failed to consult him on key decisions. “My opinion is being completely overlooked in my constituency,” Mandal wrote, highlighting that no discussion was held with him regarding ticket distribution for the assembly elections.
Blames Party for Overlooking Dedicated Workers
In a strongly worded letter, Mandal alleged that dedicated party workers were being sidelined while those with little contribution to the organization were being rewarded with election tickets. He also mentioned that the district president’s recommendations and district committee proposals were rejected at the state level, further deepening discontent among grassroots members.
“After serving the organization and the people for over 25 years, it’s painful to see loyal workers being ignored,” Mandal wrote, hinting at a widening rift between the leadership and senior cadres within JDU.
Another Blow to Nitish Kumar Before Elections
Mandal’s resignation is being seen as a major blow to Nitish Kumar, especially at a time when the NDA alliance is already facing internal seat-sharing disputes. Political analysts suggest that his exit could weaken JDU’s presence in Bhagalpur and nearby regions — areas considered strongholds for the party in previous elections.
As Bihar’s election battle intensifies, Ajay Mandal’s departure adds to the growing list of challenges for the ruling alliance, signaling that all is not well within JDU.
